Ali Wong parents are Tam ‘Tammy’ Wong and Adolphus Wong. Her mother is from Hue, Vietnam.
Despite her mom having zero knowledge of English, she immigrated to America alone when she was only 20 when Vietnam War began. She started working as a social worker.
Her Chinese-American dad also came to America when he was only 8 through Angel Island.
He worked as an anesthesiologist for 30 years for Kaiser Permanente.
Adolphus used to feel proud of the other Asian Americans’ accomplishments. He even brought William Hung’s debut album too.
She lost her father when she was 29, and shortly after that, she went on to trip with her mother to Vietnam.
But they didn’t encourage her when she wanted to pursue her career in stand-up comedy and move to New York City.
She even gave the example of successful stand-up comedians like Margaret Cho and writer Maxine Hong Kingston to gain their support. But instead, they mentioned those celebs as extraordinary exceptions.
Ali Wong Husband
Wong ex-husband Justin Hakuta is an entrepreneur and a tech company vice president. He is the son of Japanese-American inventors Ken Hakuta and Marliou Cantiller.
He graduated from Harvard Business School. He has two siblings, Kenzo and Aki.
The comedian and her former spouse met in 2010 at the marriage ceremony of their mutual friends.
After dating for four years, the couple tied the knot in November 2014 in a City Hall after they signed a prenuptial agreement. The comic didn’t want a formal marriage ceremony.
